Libraries & Churches

Marsh Library

The Marsh Library, tucked away in St Patrick’s Close, is a bibliophile’s haven. Established in the early 18th century, it is one of the oldest public libraries in Ireland. With its rare and antique collection of books, manuscripts, and maps, the library offers a serene retreat for those seeking a glimpse into Dublin’s literary and intellectual history.

Book of Kells & Trinity Library

The Book of Kells, housed in the Trinity Library, is a world-renowned medieval manuscript. Explore this beautifully illuminated work and discover the rich history of Trinity College’s library, one of the oldest in Europe, with a stunning Long Room that houses thousands of rare books.

Social Activities

Axe Throwing

When the weather pulls up its usual trick, why not try something a bit different indoors in Dublin? I recently took aim at two very different axe‑throwing venues and found each offers its own kind of fun.

Axe Club Dublin in East Wall gives you the classic format: wooden targets and familiar scoring rings. Flannel is optional but encouraged. You’ll get a safety briefing, a short warm‑up, then it’s you, an axe, and a bit of friendly rivalry.

Game of Throwing Dublin in Smithfield turns the target into an interactive screen: zombie hunts, moving bull‑seyes, a bit of playful chaos. It’s beginner‑friendly, less serious, and great for a relaxed outing with friends or family.

I’ve tried both and honestly recommend giving both a go. Sessions last around an hour (check the websites for current time‑slots) and closed‑toe shoes are required. Age limits vary by venue so check ahead.

Virtual Reality

For something immersive and weatherproof, Sandbox VR on Nassau Street offers one of the most high-tech indoor experiences in Dublin.

Choose from a wide selection of missions such as fighting off alien invaders, killing zombies, or exploring futuristic worlds. Then, gear up with motion trackers on your wrists and ankles, put on a full VR headset, and step into a public or private pod with your group.

It’s a brilliant immersive experience when it’s raining in Dublin, blending adrenaline, teamwork and sci-fi escapism in one go. The experience is fast-paced, collaborative and surprisingly physical.

I tried it with friends and we all came out buzzing… and judging by the cheers and laughter coming from nearby pods, we weren’t the only ones! It’s just as fun for families, teen groups or adults looking for something different.

Pre-booking is recommended, especially at weekends. Sessions typically run for 30+ minutes. Most games work best with 4–6 players if you want a private session, but solo or pair options are also available and can join public session which are cheaper.

There’s a robot cocktail bar and comfortable lounge on site if you want to relax before or after your session.

Worth noting: some experiences include strobe lighting or fast movement; ask ahead if you’re sensitive to that.

Escape Room

Challenge your wits and teamwork skills in an escape room adventure. With various themes and scenarios, escape rooms in Dublin provide an fun experience where participants solve puzzles and unravel mysteries to “escape” within a set time.

I have only been to Incognito Escape Room but there are several others: Escape Room Dublin, Adventure Rooms, Escape Boats, EndGame Escape Room, Clockwork Door Escape Room.

All-in-one activity spots

For a full day or evening indoors without committing to just one activity or game, the below venues pack multiple activities under one roof, perfect for groups, after-work fun or a rainy-day plan with options.

Lane 7 Dublin, just off Grafton Street (and also in Dundrum), combines bowling, Beer pong, retro arcade games and cocktails. The atmosphere is lively, with food, music and private hire options available.

Out in Leopardstown, Super Social is a large, indoor venue focused on shared play. You’ll find mini golf, ping pong, shuffleboard, darts and more. It’s casual, colourful and set up for group bookings, team events or just something different with friends.

Flight Club Dublin on Dawson Street reinvents darts with tech-based scoring, fast-paced mini games and a social bar setup. Think less pub, more party, with sessions bookable for 2 to 12 players.

Right next door, PITCH Golf is a top spot to practise your swing on state-of-the-art simulators or try virtual games. Bays can be booked for up to eight people, with cocktails and small plates served to your screen-side table.

For all these places, booking ahead is strongly advised, especially Thursdays through Saturdays. Age restrictions vary, so make sure to check ahead if planning a family visit.

Bowling

For classic entertainment, bowling offers a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Gather friends or family for a friendly game at one of the city’s bowling alleys, combining fun with a bit of healthy competition. There are 5 Bowling in Dublin and 1 nearby:
