No visit to Bundoran would be complete without riding the waves at Tullan Strand, one of best surfing spots in Ireland.
Here, the consistent waves provide the perfect condition for a fun experience. If you are keen on trying out, local surf schools like Bundoran Surf School and Murf’s surf school offer lessons and gear rental.

You can book your surf lesson or rental online but for more flexibility, the easier way in my opinion is go directly at Tullan Strand Rd Parking where you will find both companies’ Surf Shack/Van. The Parking, is easily accessible on foot from town or by car.
👉 Psst! You may be asked to leave your car keys or an ID as a security deposit for the board, so make sure to bring something along.
Though the strong waves, currents, and rip tides make it unsuitable for swimming, Tullan Strand is however a great spot for horseback riding and sandcastle building with the kids.

Only 10 min walk from the main beach in Bundoran, the West End Cliff Walk is particularly nice for an evening stroll. It starts nearby the harbor, right after the children’s playground, and follows the shore for about 1.5km. This walk offers excellent views of Bundoran Bay and those visiting in the summer might even catch the sun setting right behind Slieve League.
From the path, you can also admire Benwiskin and Benbulbin in the background if not overcast. There are a couple of benches and shelters to sit and enjoy the peaceful views.
For the braves, right at the start of the path (100 m from the main road), you will find stairs carved into the stone, leading to the West End Bathing Pool at the bottom of the cliff. This is one of the nicest and safest places to go for a swim at low tide, weather permitting of course.

Long before Bundoran became a hotspot for surfers, it thrived as a bustling seaside resort for nearly two centuries. While Tullan Strand is not suitable for swimmers, Bundoran offers other safe swimming spots, including two unique outdoor seawater pools along its coastline – the Thrupenny Pool and the Nun’s Pool.
The Thrupenny Pool
The Thrupenny Pool, named after its historical entry fee, offers a low-walled seaside sanctuary for swimmers. Its varying depths cater to both casual paddling and serious swimming, providing a controlled environment amidst the natural beauty of the seaside.
Nun’s Pool (West End Pool)
Over at Nun’s Pool, favored by locals for its relative seclusion and deeper waters, you can enjoy a refreshing swim. Also known as the West End Pool, it is situated on the west side of the town in a residential area. With very limited parking available, swimmers are encouraged to park responsibly at the free car park next to Peter Brady Park and enjoy the short walk to this pool.
As with any open water swimming, safety is paramount. Please be aware that the pools are both tidal, so checking the tide schedules and understanding the timing of incoming tides is crucial for a safe and enjoyable swim. Never swim alone and always inform someone about your swimming plans and expected return.
Horseback riding

Just a mile from the center of Bundoran, the Donegal Equestrian Centre offers beach rides, riding lessons, and pony camps. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday all year long, and is suitable for all age.

It starts right from Bundoran city Center, and takes about 2 hours return (for a slow stroll with stops)

Although, this can be a dangerous hike due to challenging area along the trail, and it should be attempted by experiences hikers only.

If you are looking for things to do around Bundoran, consider a day trip to the nearby locations below. You can easily fit a few of them on a same day as they are found close to one another.
Benbulben Forest Walk
Located in the Dartry Mountains, Benbulben offers several routes, with the Gortarowey looped walk being one of the most popular. The trail provides fantastic views of the iconic Benbulben headland if not the best. This walk is very accessible and suitable for families and dogs on leash are allowed. There is a large parking but head early to get a spot during the summer months.
👉 Benbulbin Forest Walk Car Park is about 30-minute drive from Bundoran via the N15.
If you are looking for a more challenging hike in the area, you can walk all the way to Benbulbin Summit. Although, make sure to stay on the path and gear up as the trail is often boggy and the summit very exposed to the elements.
Mullaghmore head & Glassbawn castle
Mullaghmore Head offers a spectacular coastal walk with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Donegal Bay. Nearby, Classiebawn Castle stands as a picturesque landmark against the backdrop of Benbulben Mountain, offering a glimpse into the area’s past and an excellent subject for photography.

Eagles’ rock
Eagles’ Rock is Ireland’s highest free-standing rock tower, located near the village of Carrick. It’s a more challenging hike due to the steep ascent and the fact you will need to cross several sheep farms, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort.

Make sure to keep all the sheep farm gates closed and stay away from the animals.
